Steps to Remove
the Red Wine Stain
-
Blot the Spill Immediately:
Use the clean, white cloth or paper towel to blot (not rub) the spill. Press gently to absorb as much wine as possible.
Remember: Always blot spills on carpet! Never rub or scrub carpet!
Scrubbing could cause permanent damage to the fibers. - Dilute the Stain with Cold Water: Pour a small amount of cold water directly onto the spill. This helps dilute the wine. Blot the area again with a clean cloth.
-
Apply a Cleaning Solution:
Mix one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid with one tablespoon of white vinegar and two cups of cold water.
- Dip a clean cloth into the solution and dab it onto the stain.
- Blot with a dry cloth to lift the stain.
- Repeat as necessary.
-
Use Baking Soda Paste:
If the stain persists:
- Mix three parts baking soda with one part water to make a paste.
- Apply the paste to the stain and let it dry completely.
- Vacuum the area to remove the dried baking soda.
-
Try Hydrogen Peroxide for Tough Stains (Optional):
- Test on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it won’t bleach your carpet.
- Mix one part hydrogen peroxide with two parts dishwashing liquid.
- Dab it onto the stain and let it sit for a few minutes.
- Blot with a clean cloth and rinse with cold water.
- Rinse and Blot Again: Use a damp cloth with cold water to remove any cleaning residue. Blot dry with a towel.
- Let It Dry: Place a clean, dry towel over the area and weigh it down with something heavy. This helps absorb any remaining moisture.
Prevention Tip:
For future spills, keep a carpet cleaner or stain-removal spray on hand designed specifically for wine stains. Acting fast is key!
If the stain persists despite these efforts, it might be time to call a professional carpet cleaner.
Ask your Professional Carpet Cleaner if professionally applying a carpet protector is appropriate in your case.
