Wine Spill on carpet

How to Handle
Red Wine Spilled
on your Carpet

Act Quickly! Red wine stains can set very quickly on your carpet.

You spilled some red wine on your carpet. What to do?

Let's get right to it:

Prompt attention to spots and spills is essential. Many carpets are stain resistant, and many owners have opted to have a stain-resistant protector applied, which buys you time to act when you spill red wine.

But no carpet is 100% stain proof.

Steps to Remove
the Red Wine Stain

  1. Blot the Spill Immediately: Use the clean, white cloth or paper towel to blot (not rub) the spill. Press gently to absorb as much wine as possible.

Remember: Always blot spills on carpet! Never rub or scrub carpet!
Scrubbing could cause permanent damage to the fibers.

  2. Dilute the Stain with Cold Water: Pour a small amount of cold water directly onto the spill. This helps dilute the wine. Blot the area again with a clean cloth.
  3. Apply a Cleaning Solution: Mix one tablespoon of dishwashing liquid with one tablespoon of white vinegar and two cups of cold water.
    • Dip a clean cloth into the solution and dab it onto the stain.
    • Blot with a dry cloth to lift the stain.
    • Repeat as necessary.
  4. Use Baking Soda Paste: If the stain persists:
    • Mix three parts baking soda with one part water to make a paste.
    • Apply the paste to the stain and let it dry completely.
    • Vacuum the area to remove the dried baking soda.
  5. Try Hydrogen Peroxide for Tough Stains (Optional):
    • Test on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it won’t bleach your carpet.
    • Mix one part hydrogen peroxide with two parts dishwashing liquid.
    • Dab it onto the stain and let it sit for a few minutes.
    • Blot with a clean cloth and rinse with cold water.
  6. Rinse and Blot Again: Use a damp cloth with cold water to remove any cleaning residue. Blot dry with a towel.
  7. Let It Dry: Place a clean, dry towel over the area and weigh it down with something heavy. This helps absorb any remaining moisture.

Prevention Tip:

For future spills, keep a carpet cleaner or stain-removal spray on hand designed specifically for wine stains. Acting fast is key!

If the stain persists despite these efforts, it might be time to call a professional carpet cleaner.

Ask your Professional Carpet Cleaner if professionally applying a carpet protector is appropriate in your case.
